On May 18, 2021, initiated and led by the International Glass Association, and jointly promoted by the Alliance of Glass Associations and ICOM-Glass Organization, the 2022 International Year of Glass Initiative, jointly supported by the global glass academia and industry, won the 75th United Nations, General Assembly. Officially approved by the 66th plenary meeting, 2022 will become the United Nations International Year of Glass, which will further highlight the technological, economic, cultural, and social significance of glass, promote the sustainable development of the global glass industry, and create a brighter and more beautiful glass world.
For more than 60 years, the United Nations General Assembly has commended international cooperation and concerted efforts in important areas, as well as the contributions of related organizations and institutions to society by proclaiming the United Nations International Year. In the 21st century, the International Year of Astronomy (2009), the International Year of Chemistry (2011), the International Year of Light and Light-Based Technologies (2015), and the International Year of the Periodic Table of Chemical Elements (2019) have been approved.
Glass is not only a necessity of human life but also an important material to promote industrial development and social progress. Especially in the 21st century, with the rapid development of science and technology and the continuous extension of glass applications, it is used in communications (optical fibers), energy (photovoltaics), and life. In fields such as science (medical glass), glass is playing an increasingly important role. Since the founding of the People’s Republic of China, especially since the reform and opening-up, China’s glass industry has grown from small to large, from weak to strong. Through continuous advancement of technological innovation and structural adjustment, not only has its output accounted for an important share in the world, its technology and equipment have also reached the world’s advanced level. The 0.12mm ultra-thin electronic touch glass, 30-micron flexible foldable glass, China's first-generation 8.5 floats TFT-LCD glass substrate, and neutral borosilicate medicinal glass developed and produced by the Kaisheng Technology Group of the Building Materials Group Innovative achievements have promoted the continuous development of China's glass industry to high-end, green, and digital, and it has achieved a leap to follow and lead the world.
Facing the increasingly widespread application and immeasurable future value of glass, at the annual meeting of the International Glass Association held in Yokohama, Japan in 2018, experts and scholars in the glass industry represented by Peng Shou, chairman of the 23rd International Glass Association and academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Unanimously proposed the establishment of the International Year of Glass. This initiative has been widely recognized and supported by relevant national ministries and associations, the Chinese Ceramic Society, and the China National Building Materials Group.
Year 2022 becomes the United Nations International Year of Glass
As a core member unit of the International Glass Association, China National Building Materials International Engineering Group Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of China National Building Material Group, is fully committed to the preparation of the initiative. Starting in 2019, it has solicited extensive support for the International Year of Glass initiative, overcoming many difficulties, and The 2022 International Year of Glass initiative team worked together, and finally received positive responses and written support from 1,500 universities, research centers, societies, industry associations, museums, glass manufacturers and enterprises from 79 countries on 5 continents.
In 2022, the International Year of Glass will organize various activities covering the world, including technology summits, seminars, industry exhibitions, glass summer camps, glass art exhibitions, etc., focusing on promoting the technology and technology formed by the material properties and ultimate functions of glass. Cultural achievements. China will take the 32nd China International Glass Industry Technology Exhibition as an important event to simultaneously launch new glass material summit forums, technical lectures, and glass science popularization.
